In just three months, two of the greatest NBA franchises changed owners! In March, the Boston Celtics were sold to Bill Chisholm for $6.1 billion, and today, the Los Angeles Lakers met the same fate, though their price was significantly higher.
After 46 years, the Buss family sold the majority control of the LA franchise to businessman Mark Walter for a mind-blowing $10 billion, making arguably the biggest deal in the history of sports!

The deal has yet to be made official, while The Athletic claims its value may reach $12 billion. Still, even if the sellers "settle for" two billion less, it will be the biggest-ever sale of any sports club.
The Lakers were in the Buss family's hands since 1979 when Jerry Buss purchased the franchise and the Forum arena from Jack Kent Cooke for $67.5 million. Since then, the LA team has won as many as 11 NBA titles, more than any other side in that period.
Jerry Buss died in 2013, and the 66% controlling stake was equally split between his six children. Nevertheless, after a family dispute, Jerry's daughter, Jeanie, became the official controlling owner in 2017, getting lifetime operational control over the franchise from her siblings.
Now, she decided to sell the franchise to Mark Walter, CEO of Guggenheim Partners, a global financial services firm with assets under management worth over $325 billion. Walter already has experience owning sports teams, as he holds ownership shares of several professional sports organizations, such as the baseball team Los Angeles Dodgers, the WNBA franchise Los Angeles Sparks, the Formula 1 team Cadillac, and the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL).
Now, the new era of the second most decorated NBA franchise begins, though the Lakers' ultimate goals are always the same: having the best players and winning trophies.
